Evergreen Lawn Care was started by two friends, Mark Witkowski and Jim O’Donnell back in 1986. Jim moved up to Northern Michigan first, and Mark followed a year later. They started Evergreen Lawn Care with just two mowers, one trimmer, one blower, one weed whip, and operated the company out of an office at Lakeside Club Condominiums.
In 1992, Jim decided to purchase Taylor Rental and Mark decided to stick with the lawn care business opting to be the sole owner/operator. Mark began building the company and customer base quickly with his reliability, fair pricing, and his keen eye to the details.
In 1994, Mark purchased Rainmaker Irrigation from Andrew Smith. He purchased a couple pick-up trucks, an enclosed trailer, and a trenching machine. Luckily, he also got a couple of very knowledgeable employees with that purchase – one being Rob Jensen, who is still employed by Rainmaker Irrigation. Mark didn’t know much about irrigation at that time, but he knew watering is crucial to making grass grown, which is crucial to a lawn mowing business.
By 1997, Evergreen Lawn care needed a bigger building, so Mark moved and rented out the old AMS Sanitation building on Howard Road, and eventually purchased it in 2002. Business was good, jobs were plentiful as Bay Harbor was being developed, and the business grew.
In 2008, Evergreen Lawn Care purchased Moonlight Services and with that, added dock installation and removal to the services offered. Again, Mark didn’t know the business of dock installation and removal, so the addition of Cory Furgeson, one of the owners of Moonlight Services, to our employee list was paramount.
Since then, the business continues to thrive. There are now approximately fifty employees, three full time office staff, six mowing crews, a landscaping crew, irrigation installation and service crews, seven licensed fertilizer technicians, and Mark still continues to work in the field when needed. Other days, Mark will be out estimating jobs, meeting with customers, or working at his old occupation when he lived downstate – being a mechanic. When Mark isn’t working, he enjoys spending time on the water, biking, and snowmobiling in the winter.
